38 Nooses

38 Nooses
©Dan Sullivan 2014

38 Nooses swinging in the wind
The hangman checks his watch again
A few clouds drifting across the sky
And 38 Dakotas  waiting to die

Soldiers torn  by lead and steel
Ghosts departing  the battlefield
Into the smoke they disappear
Just as if they were never here

Husbands, wives, sons and daughters
Some were spared and some were slaughtered
The news spread like a prarie fire
Riding east on the telegraph wire

The thunder dies and all is still
Except for the creaking of the wheels
As ambulance wagons carry away
Ten thousand dead Blue and Grey

Justice  mixed in the blood of revenge
Weighed on the scale against the dead
The prarieland  is vast and cold
No one  knows the secrets it holds

Can you feel that December wind
It’s grey as shame and cold as sin
From the Land of Lakes the cold wind blows
All the way to Cashtown Road

38 Nooses swinging in the wind
The hangman checks his watch again
In the distance a coyote calls
And suddenly the  trap doors  fall

Refugee

REFUGEE
© Dan Sullivan 2013

I am just a Refugee
I have no place to rest
I’m hungry and  I’m tired now
I have but one request

Won’t someone spare a Refugee
Some water and some bread
And perhaps a place upon the  floor
To lay my weary head

The fever  took my mother
I have no family
I’m lost and forgotten
There’s no one left for me

No vagabond am I
I  did not choose this fate
To stand outside the city walls
Begging at the gate

I am just a Refugee
I have no place to rest
I’m hungry and I’m tired now
I have but one request

Won’t someone spare a Refugee
Some water and some bread
And perhaps a place upon the  floor
To lay my weary head

Can We Give It One More Try?

© 2014 Dan Sullivan

It’s the New Year
It’s a brand new start,
I’m alone here
With my old broken heart

I need to feel
Your sweet heart next to mine
Is there a chance
We can give it one more try?

I know they say
Everything will heal in time
But have they ever
Had a broken heart like mine ?

I was a fool
I never meant to make you cry
Is there a chance
We can give it one more try?

Once I had your love but I let it slip away
Now I'm missing you more and more each day

It’s the New Year
It’s a brand new start,
I’m alone here
With my old broken heart

I need to feel
Your sweet heart next to mine
Is there a chance
We can give it one more try?

When This Burden Is Lifted From Me

©Dan Sullivan 2014

Like a leaf I am blown
Back and forth, to and fro
Helplessly adrift on the breeze
But Angels will rejoice
And they’ll sing in one voice
When this burden is lifted from me

I am trapped in this life
Between darkness and light
Where temptation won’t let me be
But Angels will rejoice
And they’ll sing in one voice
When this burden is lifted from me

In this world I stumble and fall into sin
I repent then I fall once again
Sometimes I fall to my knees in prayer
Sometimes my weakness is too much to bear

I am trapped in this life
Between darkness and light
Where temptation won’t let me be
But Angels will rejoice
And they’ll sing in one voice
When this burden is lifted from me

Tattle Tale, Tattle Tale

Here's a song I wrote with Lisa Gundling, a songwriter on the website "Just Plain Folks Music."

An imaginary arrow
An imaginary bow
A boy pulls back the bowstring
And lets the arrow go

It flies right out the window
It flies so straight and true
But a little girl sees it
And spills the beans at school

Tattle tale, tattle tale
You belong in jail
We’re gonna hang your britches
On a rusty nail

Next day the little boy
Gets hauled into the office
The little girl is frowning
"Yes," she says, "I saw it."

The little boy denies it
"What proof is there?" says he
The little girl just frowns some more
"Who needs proof?" says she

Tattle tale, tattle tale
You belong in jail
We’re gonna hang your britches
On a rusty nail

The parents of the children
Are called to testify
And both tell the policeman
"My child would never lie"

"Well somebody is lying
And somebody must pay
"I have no choice," the sergeant says
"I'll take them both away"

Tattle tale, tattle tale
You belong in jail
We’re gonna hang your britches
On a rusty nail

Tomorrow he'll regret
Playing make believe at school
And he won't be quite so quick to break
Imaginary rules

Tomorrow she'll be sorry
For all the trouble she got in
And if she's learned her lesson well
She'll never snitch again

Tattle tale, tattle tale
You belong in jail
We’re gonna hang your britches
On a rusty nail

CALVARY ROAD

As I go through this world
And the troubles pile up
I remember that Jesus
Once drank from the cup
He gave everything
That one man could give
He died on the Cross
So sinners might live

Calvary Road
Calvary Road
Our sins were forgiven
On Calvary Road

I'm traveling through
A world full of lies
It seems like the truth
Is always disguised
Can't even believe
What you see with your eyes
Cross my heart
And hope to die

Calvary Road
Calvary Road
Our sins were forgiven
On Calvary Road

I'm searching for truth
On Calvary Road
More than a man
Walked here I am told
He carried a promise
More precious than gold
He gave us Salvation
On Calvary Road

Calvary Road
Calvary Road
Our sins were forgiven
On Calvary Road
